with the Huawei Ascend Y300 offers a new entry-level smartphone with Android, which can be had for 145 euros currently. The price is very low and requires some compromises. Nevertheless, the device has a long battery life, a decent display and useful features. Golem.de has tested the smartphone.

The Ascend Y300 comes with the Android version 4.1.1 aka Jelly Bean. In Huawei Emotion UI installed its own user interface that runs in version 1.0. According to Huawei, the user interface should be a useful addition to Android, the user ease of operation and give him many preferences.

In fact, the appearance of Emotion UI can be adjusted easily and quickly. Huawei provides the user with five basic designs to choose whose stylistic range from subtle to quietschbunt. The different designs affect the appearance of the icons, the color selection of widgets, the background image of the home screen, the notification sounds and appearance of the lock screen. The user can also choose from a variety of effects when scrolling the home screen pages. This design configuration options are known so far of Android launchers from the Play Store, others such as Samsung’s own TouchWiz user interface HTC Sense or do not offer such a comprehensive design options. Sony’s user interface offers different designs after all.

Configurable Widget

A special feature is the

Me widget: the widget is loaded by the user himself with building blocks and can be designed individually. For this, different sized blocks weather, clock, music player controls, gallery previews and shortcut keys for contacts. So the user can combine, for example, a large weather widget with a small clock and a small player control or a small weather widget with a large number of player control and speed dial buttons. The block selection is limited, third-party apps can not be installed in the Me widget. Whether it really offers an advantage over individual widgets, each user must decide for themselves. We found the concept interesting, but still expandable.

in the system settings, the Huawei user interface has also left its mark: They are distributed at Ascend Y300 to two riders. The first “General” tab lists the frequently used settings such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness adjustment and volume settings. The usual Android system settings are then under the tab “All”. Although the division brings more clarity, but seems unnecessary in view of the possibilities of the quick settings bar.

Configurable Quick Menu Bar

After using the quick menu bar, the user has easy access to the basic settings of smart phones. Thus, the WLAN module and Bluetooth can be switched or the brightness can be regulated. The bar can be fitted according to their own preferences, do not allow what many other user interfaces.

the Profile selection of Ascend Y300 is accessible via this quick settings bar. About four preset profiles, the user can customize the behavior of the Ascend Y300 to the respective environment. The outdoor-profile example is the volume and brightness to maximum, while the Meeting profile, the smartphone is dumb.
